What happened

Mold needs water. Something gave it water.

Mold can begin to grow within 24–48 hours on wet drywall, wood, carpet, etc. Mold spreads through the air by releasing spores. Cleaning mold yourself usually makes the problem worse because you're releasing more spores into the air. We don't use bleach on mold because bleach only removes the mold stain on the surface. It doesn't actually remove the mold from porous materials. That's why the EPA doesn't recommend using bleach to clean up mold.

Mold growth is commonly caused by slow leaks in water supply lines inside the walls, past water damage in a wall or ceiling, roof leaks, window leaks, or humid rooms with poor airflow. When you need mold cleanup in your bathroom, kitchen, closet, attic, crawl space, or anywhere there's been a leak, call Guardian. We can also rebuild the area once the mold removal is complete. Many homes after fire damage also have mold issues, so we are experienced in these situations as well.

If you have 25 contiguous square feet or more of mold, Texas requires a TDLR-licensed mold remediation contractor to remove it. Guardian does not do mold remediation ourselves, but we work with a licensed Texas mold remediation contractor who can take care of your mold issues. We will take care of any water damage that caused the mold and rebuild your house after the remediation is done. All you have to do is make one call and we will handle the rest for you.

What we do

How a mold job works with Guardian

  1. Find the moisture.

We use moisture meters to find the source of the leak or condensation problem. Without this step, nothing else lasts.

  2. Contain the area (licensed partner)

Our licensed partner seals the area with plastic containment and negative air so spores do not spread through the house.

  3. Clean and remove affected materials (licensed partner)

The licensed partner bags and removes porous materials like drywall, insulation, and carpet, and cleans and treats solid surfaces.

  4. Clean the air (licensed partner)

The licensed partner runs HEPA air scrubbers through the job and HEPA-vacuums and wipes every surface before clearance.

  5. Dry and verify.

We make sure the structure is dried out and back to normal moisture readings before closing up the wall or ceiling.

  6. Rebuild.

We'll install new drywall, insulation, trim, paint, flooring, etc.

What to do while you are waiting for us to arrive

  • Don't touch anything. Disturbing the mold will cause it to spread.
  • Don't use bleach. It won't do any good and the fumes aren't worth it.
  • Close off the room and make sure you aren't circulating air from the room with a fan.
  • If it's a leak from a water supply line under a sink, you may want to turn off the water to that line.
  • Take photos of the mold growth and any water staining.
  • If possible, keep family members who may be sensitive to mold out of the house, especially young children, elderly people, and anyone with asthma or allergies.

Questions

Common questions about mold

Didn't find the answer you were looking for? Call or send us an email. Read more: mold vs. mildew.

Do I need mold testing?

If you have visible mold, you don't always need mold testing. Your focus should be on finding the moisture problem and safely removing the affected materials. If you suspect there is mold but can't see any, you may want to consider testing. Also, if you have health concerns, if it's necessary for an insurance claim, or if you're a landlord, you may want to have testing done. Call us and we can give you our recommendation on whether you need testing or not.

Is mold dangerous?

Mold can be dangerous to people with weakened immune systems, young children, the elderly, and anyone with asthma or allergies. It's best not to live in a house with active mold growth, even if you are perfectly healthy. The solution is the same regardless of whether you are experiencing health concerns: find and correct the moisture problem, remove the mold, and clean the air.

Is Guardian a licensed mold remediation contractor in Texas?

Guardian is not licensed to perform mold remediation in Texas through TDLR. Texas requires a licensed mold remediation contractor to perform the remediation, requires that a licensed mold assessor write the protocol for the contractor to follow, and requires that notice be given to TDLR before the work begins. Guardian does not perform the remediation, but we work with a licensed mold remediation contractor who handles it. We take care of any moisture issues in the house that caused the mold, coordinate the remediation, and rebuild your house after the contractor is done and the area has been cleared.

Will the mold come back?

The mold won't come back if you fix the moisture problem. When the moisture problem isn't corrected, the mold will come back. Fixing the surface without repairing the moisture problem behind the wall won't fix the mold problem.

Found mold? Don't try to scrub it.
